Microsoft is currently in negotiations to purchase the Israeli technology company 3DV Systems for $35 million. The company produces a suite of 3D video cameras that can be used in gaming, web-conferencing and the automotive worlds. The gaming aspect of their 3D cameras seem to be in relation to using a wide variety of ‘gestures’ to reflect movement within a game. Their video gallery has some videos demonstrating their technology.
3DV Systems got quite a bit of press at 2008’s CES including being a finalist for CNET’s “Best of CES 2008.” Since then however it seems that they have either fallen off the map or have been playing their cards close to their chest in hopes of being bought out. This move is an interesting one for Microsoft and one that could prove to be a turning point for next-generation gaming.
It seems that their technology goes beyond that of a simple Wiimote and actually let’s you go all Minority Report on that ass without using gloves. I can see all kinds of uses for this technology in the Microsoft world outside of just the current and nextgen Xboxes; thirty-five large may be a steal.
