Here I am getting ready for the big game and live blogging the commercials when I stumble across Jeff Bercovici’s article on Portfolio about the SoBe 3D ads we have been talking up here at D|M.
If my experience was anything to go by, it was not money well spent. Jeffrey Katzenberg may be convinced that 3-D is the future, but the SoBe spot was a big letdown. I gather the dancing lizards and NFL stars featured in it were supposed to appear to pop out of the screen. They didn’t. It was like a normal video viewed through cheap, distorted colored plastic.
You know what else is a let down, I have yet to find these 3D glasses. As we stand right now I have nothing for the big event. Let me know if you have been able to find any, I need some for Chuck the next night.
Here is the commercial set to roll this Sunday:
I really hope it looks better in 3D.
UPDATE: SobeWorld has cleverly responded to our blog post via Twitter.

UPDATE 2.0: CrunchGear has a behind the scense look at the making of the commercial.

Thanks Eugene, as if I needed an excuse to stop by Frys on the way home. I will let the world know how it goes
