Windows 7 Beta Delayed

Sat, Jan 10, 2009

Microsoft Software, Software

As most of you probably know by now, Microsoft released Windows 7 Beta to the public yesterday.  Their plan was to let the first 2.5 million users download their new operating system for testing purposes.  What they didn’t count on was their servers being crushed by the overwhelming demand.  The high traffic made Brandon LeBlanc post a message stating:

Due to very heavy traffic we’re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I’ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!

It is now available for download.  The download is 2.5GB for the 32-Bit Version and 3.2GB for the 64-Bit Version.

Ha, I’m sure it sucked to be those web admins yesterday. You’d think with something like this they would host it outside of the core microsoft.com infrastructure. Hard to believe they didn’t anticipate the traffic crush.
