3-D – The future of sports and television

Future Hardware, Hardware

I’m kicking myself in the ass for missing this.  On Thursday, several movie theatres around the country aired the Florida/Oklahoma BCS championship game in 3-D, the first broadcast of its kind for college football.  Reviews from the lucky fans that got to witness the game for the most part have been positive, with the primary complaint being that the broadcast lacked some of the standard items that we’ve grown accustomed to when watching games, such as the yellow first down marker and the ever present down/distance indicator. The WOW factor was definitely there for all though, and all signs point to 3-D technology finally taking off after several failed attempts over the years.  Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has gone so far as to call 3-D the “LSD of 2009.”

High Definition took sports viewing to a completely new level, and it’s down right painful and almost not worth it for me these days to watch a game in SD.  In fact, I’ll go on record and say that if you don’t have an HDTV, we’ll probably never be friends.  I equate not having an HD television with being right up there with not having a broadband internet connection.  I don’t know how people survive without either one.  3-D looks like it is going to be the next big thing to make fans feel like they are not only in the stadium, but actually on the field and in the game.  This could be a GREAT thing when watching Erin Andrews during a college football broadcast, but 3-D may be seen as a negative if I’m having to watch a pile of crap like the Detroit Lions or even worse, Tony Romo.  If 3-D would have been around a few years ago for games involving my Houston Texans, I’m sure plenty of fans would have joined me in bitch slapping the virtual likeness of David Carr as he took another sack or kept the city on the edge of their seats as he contemplated his next hair style.

Although I’m all for 3D, it’s not quite there yet. It’ll be a few years until we see something worth watching/buying. Sony is one of the few companies working on a unassisted 3D TV, meaning no visual aid (glasses) necessary to see the 3D. Will be pretty interesting when it gets to that point. 3D gaming was THE thing at CES this year.
